In this unit we were largely concerned with the driving question which stated, "what makes human nature inherently good or evil and knowing this what can we as people do to form a more just society to better mankind?"
To help us answer the DQ we read "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. In it Golding tells the tale of a group of schoolboys who survive a plane crash only to be stranded on an uninhabited island in the middle of the ocean. With no help to be found the boys must fend for themselves and form a tribe to survive. As time passes however the classic conditioning they were brought up with as members of British society begins to break down and their raw human nature shows.
My group concluded that human nature is neither good nor evil but rather inherently selfish. Selfishness we argued, is what drives people to fight and into conflict. Therefore to form a better society self-interest must be exploited creatively in order to benefit all people.
